It looks like a black-and-white photo, yet actually much better. As an intermediate-level painter, I am always amazed by excellent drawings. I did a little charcoal, maybe two pieces, in my art classes throughout primary, middle, and secondary school. O'Sensei's portrait here is not simply by an unskilled artist who was in "the zone" one day. I would be surprised if this is not a culmination of skills he learned over many, many years of training in the charcoal medium.
