Happo Giri

Hi, I have another weapons terminology question - what does happo giri mean? Thanks!

8 directional cutting... also happo undo, 8 directional movement (without bokuto.) Depends on stance(and schools) which direction the movement goes.

Think along the lines of cutting: north, south, east, west, SW, NE, NW, SE.. 8 directions..

Most common usage I can think of in Tai Jutsu is in shiho nage...stepping off the back foot and using a slicing action before lifting your arms and turning back to cut uke down to what we refer to as rear triangle or rear third point.

This movement is the same as some of the cuts in the 8 diectional sequence described by Eric above.

I agree it depends on the school which direction you go in...but usually you go the opposite way when practicing with a jo I believe.

Very concise, I'd only add that your directions are based on left foot forward. If you start in migi hanmi, the directions are north, south, west, east, SE, NW, NE, SW. Of course that's assuming you are applying these directions to your body movement based on the fact that you are facing "north" to start. If you happen to be facing SE in migi hanmi, then it's SE, NW, NE, SW, W, E, S, N but then if you're in hidari hanmi facing........., hey it's Friday afternoon and I'm off for 3 days .

If anyone can be bothered I think you could determine this based upon the assumption that the kamiza is always in the east.

But as Bryan says....its friday afternoon!
