Hi everyone,

To follow up on this thread...

Without naming names, what qualities and characteristics of an aikido student impress you most?

Re: Student Qualities/Characteristics

How about open to instruction (not needing to be dragged through everything).

I like someone who asks questions; voices uncertainty or concerns; doesn't just say 'yes Sensei'. It shows they're thinking; not just trying to learn by rote.

Answers are only easy when they're incomplete.

Re: Student Qualities/Characteristics

The willingness to share the girls.

Considering the state of one of your arms Jesse - you should be thankful.

Seriously. Someone who attends consistently, knows how to drive their own training and is willing to help those with less experience.

Consistent attendance, openness to learn, a positive respectful attitude, a good sense of humor, and humility.

All this and pays dues on time without having to be reminded

Re: Student Qualities/Characteristics

I guess I could only think of the qualities/characteristics I don't want...

1. Come to class late and leave early so as to not help laying out the mats and put them away.

2. Only comes to class to talk.

3. Finds any excuse to get out of or disrupt training.

4. Keeps trying to teach everyone including the teachers.

5. The "In my style we do it this way..." guy.

6. The "I should be at the top because I have a blackbelt in some other style" guy.

7. Injures other students.

8. Rude to others and talks back or disrespects the teachers.

9. Comes only to challenge people to a fight.

10. Doesn't keep himself clean.

11. Comes to the school drunk.
