Tomiki Video

Hi,

I have just watched a video entitled Advanced Aikido -Koryu no kata by Dr. Lee, Ah Loi, 7th dan. I am interested in hearing from people in this style (Tomiki aikido, right?) as to what they think of the video and/or Dr> Lee. I know next to nothing about the style and am wondering if this video is a good representation. Also is she typical for 7th dan?

Thanks,
Charles Hill

Re: Tomiki Video

I've had the video for years and think it's an excellent representation of the Tomiki style. I studied Tomiki Aikido for around 10 years (informally) with friends who were all experienced Martial Artists, and found it to be very effective "on the street".

As for Dr. Ah Loi Lee - she's just fantastic! She's probably higher than 7th Dan now, I would imagine. I can't say for sure if it's typical for that grade as I am ungraded in Tomiki.

We (my friends and I) did learn a great deal from it. The video in itself is an overview of the style rather than an in-depth study. I think it's meant more as a "trailer" type video to advertise Tomiki Aikido. Her two training partners in the video also have their own videos out, though I haven't seen them. I think they'd be worth checking out though.

Tomiki Aikido is the only Aikido style I've studied (informally), so it's quite natural for me now. I haven't heard anything about this lady since I got the video, so I can't offer any more info on her current status. I'm sure someone will offer better information about her.

I'm about to begin formal training in Aikikai Aikido, so it'll be interesting to see how it differs.

Iain.
