Dojo Rec In Charleston, SC
I have a student relocating to Charleston, SC. Can anyone give me the scoop on the scene there? Great places, places to avoid at all costs, etc.
You can post or e-mail me privately at gregs_shell_account@yahoo.com .
Best regards,

Re: Dojo Rec In Charleston, SC
Are you thinking about the Seibukan Aikido Dojo in Charleston West Virginia? I don't didn't find one in Charleston, SC, nor any AAA dojo (I'm going by you listing Kyushikan as you dojo).

Re: Dojo Rec In Charleston, SC
Your student should probably start at Roy Suenaka's dojo.
He has a number of schools in the SE. One of my peers thought very highly of him. One of his Senior students has a school in Atlanta, and your student could do a lot worse.
Roy is ex-Ki Society, but has a strong Karate backround as well, and his guys practice hard.
Also saw a 6th dan in Seidokan listed on the dojo search engine.
As you probably know he will be most comfortable in a style that most reflects what you do now...so if there is a dojo in your style in CHarleston, it pays to look there too.

Doug Wedell Sensei is teaching in two locations in Columbia SC. My knowledge of SC geography is non-existant but according to the dojo search it's more than 75 miles from Charleston, so it may be a bit of a drive.

IIRC you teach Iwama influenced aikido? If your student is looking for something similar to that....well, Seidokan probably ain't it I write this having no formal training in Iwama aikido, just what I've seen on vids and such so take it with as much salt as required. However if he's looking to experience different flavors of aikido then Seidokan would be right up his alley...all depends what he wants I guess.

Re: Dojo Rec In Charleston, SC
All,
Thank you for the good recommendations.
Yep: Iwama influenced and more mainline as time passes. OTOH, while the Seidokan dojo is too much of a drive for my student to drive to class regularly, but I have told him that he should visit if he's in town.
Best regards,

Re: Dojo Rec In Charleston, SC
As others said, I would recommend Suenaka sensei without hesitation. He's a gem of the martial arts world hidden away in Charleston.
