Confused Fudebakudo

Hi,

not sure if many people know about this site:

www.fudebakudo.com

'the way of the exploding pen'

check out the 'jo kata' cartoon - i think we've all been there at some time

Hi Liane,

Yes, Dave does have a great sense of humor. His illustrations are very much spot-on.

The jo kata illustration has been on this very site for a few years now in its humor section along with his cartoon on "ukemi." Good stuff.

In fact the 31-count jo kata first appeared in The Cartoonist newspaper in 1993, (as well as the karate "Hokikoki Kata"), and to my amazement I started to get reports of sightings of photocopies of it all around the world.

Mind you, before I drew the cartoon I did perform the kata pretty much as illustrated at a seminar until I was asked by the sensei present to kindly sit down, thank you. So technically I think the cartoon was actually originally a piece of performance art.

Since then, of course, it's turned out that I was not alone in botching it up like this. Now whenever I see the 31-count kata performed right up to the 31st move without interruption, I assume it's actually the Fudebakudo 31-count kata gone wrong.

Incidentally we are planning on publishing the Fudebakudo book in a month or two but I'm not allowed to say that because it's against Forum rules of "blatant advertising". I will now report my own post to a moderator (Jun).

Yours
Dave

Confused

Beholder - Excellent, the site is a work of genius!

however, i would like to know why the mentor never tells me to do kung fu, is it not one of the options? still at least i was told to study aikido

staff forms are always difficult to remember, they have more repetition than sword...well, i think its a good excuse

Actually I find them harder due to the fact, that a jo has two ends, both used to strike/control the opponent with during the technique. The sword is allways held in the same end - or should be - not doing so would be rather hmm.. stupid..

Well, we launched at SENI last weekend (photos should be up in a day or two) -- so it's too late for first dibbs... in fact Liane turned up and said "Aikiweb!", which was fun So she's beaten all of aikiweb to get her signed copy... Er, not that it's a competition or anything.

You'll have to look at the Fudebakudo website for details of how to get hold of a copy. If you do it by post then you can have a signed one of course.

Or maybe Liane will sell you hers at a special price...

Hi Dave,

First off, congratulations! I'm sure it's been a lot of work getting your book together.

Your page on the Fudebakudo book still says the book is "Not Yet Available." Are you planning on updating that? I'd like to announce this great news on the front page of AikiWeb, if that's OK with you...

We don't have the shop on-line yet -- since timing is essential to good aikido, I was cool enough to be setting up the stand at the show before I had seen the final books because the printer was rushing them up to as at the same time... I actually held the final product in my hands for the first time after the launch had technically started So really the book isn't available in any honest meaning of the word because we're not selling it mail-order yet -- should be OK next week, all being well.

Don't worry I'll let you know, and the Fudebakudo website will of course also announce it. Meanwhile, I will get photos of our stand at SENI -- the official Fudebakudo launch -- onto the site tonight. That's not as boring as it sounds because we had the foxiest Sales Staff at the show
