Dating at the dojo

Before I even ask my question here, I want to make it clear that I don't view the dojo as a pickup spot. I'm not there for dating, I'm there for exercise and training.

With that said, I've known people who have met, dated, and have married because of their shared interest in Aikido. I'm in my late 30's and recently become single after a long relationship. Frankly, this Tinder world sucks. I'm not trying to pick anyone up, but my friends say, go do things and meet people with similar interests doing those things. Well, I'm at the dojo or gym a lot of the time when I'm not working. I would love to meet someone who has a shared interest in Aikido, knows what we go through, wants to work to help each other get better.

I'm just curious what others have experienced with this?

It can be done. It can be messy. Better to be friends and find what common interest you have outside the gym or dojo first.

Go ahead, tread on me.

Re: Dating at the dojo

No experience first-hand but I've seen some secondhand. A favorite couple are married and have children and seem very happy and I love and respect everything I know about them. Others have been more "interesting." All I can guess is that we all need to begin and end with respect. Easier said than done I suppose...in some cases.

Re: Dating at the dojo

Yes, some dojos can get more "incestuous," especially if there is socialising after the practice. But the sharing of an interest like aikido can create strong bonds.

Best regards,

Re: Dating at the dojo

I met my husband at the dojo. Things can go awry if the relationship doesn’t work out though.
