Bad news for Aikido book fans...

Just discovered that Kodansha International, who have been a prolific publisher of Aikido (and other MA) books, has ceased operations permanently. Some of their existing publications will continue under their former affiliate brand, Kodansha America, but there will be no new products, and those titles still "in the pipe" (like the much-anticipated Shioda title, "Aikido: My Spiritual Journey") have been cancelled. I'll post more info as I get it...

Sad but true. I actually had a project in the pipeline when it happened.

Best,

Chris

Don't give up on it... We'd still like to see it, and there are other options.

It was actually a non-Aikido translation project with John Stevens - enough of a low profile thing that it's probably not likely to get picked up. Even his Aikido books never really made that much money, but I hope they get picked up somewhere else...

Best,

Chris

They really were my favorite Aikido book company. Their bindings were very nice. Sad.

Shioda book has been cancelled, or so it seems.

Bad news indeed.

Re: Bad news for Aikido book fans...

That had a 1st May release, so i'd hoped it'd escape the cessation.
All the work that must have gone into it, and for nothing.

The May 1 date was for the benefit of Amazon.com pre-sales, methinks. The project was actually cancelled back in December, and no galley copies had been printed. Amazon has taken down the listing. Still, if they had edited copy ready to go to print, I suppose there is a chance that the Yoshinkan group will go ahead with a different publisher. I certainly hope so.

I don't suppose there's been any further word on that Shioda book - Aikido: My Spiritual Journey?
I was really looking forward to reading it.

Think about online publishing. That channel would be a natural for a book with a small, intense, and geographically distributed market. And with print-on-demand you can still get hardcopy.

I have tried to contact Yoshinkan Hombu a few times on their English-language website to see if they can tell me anything, but they have yet to answer any of my messages. Anybody here with Yoshinkan ties that might fare better than I??

Thanks for the tip. I just ordered it. I wonder if it will actually ship. For anyone inclined to give it a try as well, coupon code HAPPYHALLOWEEN35 will save 30%. Not sure when it expires.

Hey,
Hope you're doing well. I ordered the book, too. Coupon code is actually "HAPPYHALLOWEEN325". With shipping, it was about $31. Can't find the book anywhere else, though. It's listed as sold out everywhere.

Yeah, mine got cancelled. It's because it wasn't a "LULU" published book, but an Ingram published book. LULU and Ingram had a partnership (not sure if it's still there) and it looks like Ingram isn't selling the book any longer but forgot to update LULU until we ordered it.
