You are a 6th kyu, not 1st. A 1st kyu is a brown belt.

That means that you are worth some $1.50 - or just an add-on for free to someone buying a new gi.

If you wear a white belt, you might be a sincere aikidoka.

Re: What is first kyu called?

If you ARE a white belt, my dictionary says, you are called "shiro obi" (Japanese reading) or "haku tai" (Chinese reading). I am not sure, if there are mixed versions like "haku obi" or "shira tai", the last one sounds quite fluid.

Just to remind some readers. This reply reflects that we are in the HUMOR Section. Do not try to take it serious :!:, even if you cannot laugh. That happenes regularily to my jokes.

We generally, and affectionately mind you, refer to them as "no kyus".

Re: What is first kyu called?

According to Yamada Sensei at the Yudansha seminar this past weekend, an ikkyu is called "almost a shodan." (You're almost there, but not quite yet.)
