Poetry
During a six-month poetry-writing stay in St. Petersburg, FL, I wrote a few dozen. This is one of my top ten favorites that I wrote. I submitted my works to many medium to highly exclusive journals, even Poetry and The New Yorker. I have read The New York Quartery, Poetry, The New Yorker, and Best American Poetry - 2008. What I've discovered is that my style is much different from the current mainstream. I like writing poems that take the reader from A to B, and he/she hopefully has a fun ride. What's considered great poetry these days is usually depressing and takes 20 reads to understand, if even then. So, here I go:
DISCOVERY INEVITABLE
Approaching the tree of fertility, I frightened away
Two emerald-plumed parrots who failed to trust their camouflage;
Maybe they were digging beaks into the world's ultimate food.
Some avocados still clung above,
Then one dropped down with a resounding thump.
I thought of Newton who preferred apples.
A bulkier fruit would have dented his crown
And surely rendered him unconscious for a moment.
Upon awakening he would have made
Guacamole instead of gravity—
A resume would fade to paler green.
Yet another inquisitive spirit might have found
Shade beneath cherry blossoms in spring,
Where pink petals abound, surround, descend.
A mystery embraces the threshold of solution.
