Counting in Japanese

Hi all,

I am trying to find the Japanese words used to count from one to ten!!

Simple I guess for those who have been in the fold for a while, but to a newbie like me it isn't so!!

Any help would be appreciated!!

Hello Peter,

If you use the drectory on the left, follow the launguage link, the I believe it is the essay at the top that is an audio aikido pronounciation guide.
I use that almost everyday. Once in the guide scroll down, I think the numbers are at the bottom.

I had an amazing experience on my last test. I've been doing aikido for about two years and this past year I took two semesters of Japanese; I tested just before leaving Tucson for summer work in Chicago. Anyway, one of the test requirements is Saito's 31-count kata, with each move counted out loud, and sensei asked me to count. When I got to 22 I realized that (completely unconciously) I was counting in Japanese.

I was very surprised, since foreign-language number skills are the most difficult for me to pick up; but when my focus went to the kata the count came out appropriately. What I don't know is whether this means I've been studying Japanese too hard, or studying the kata not hard enough. Probably the latter.

I think that counting in Japanese is one of the easiest things in the language. If you know how to count from one to ten, you should now know how to count up to 99. Once you learn the word for 100 (hyaku), you now know how to count up to 999...
