Kagami Biraki Promotions 2011
Any news on the Kagami Biraki (January 9) promotions of Aikikai Hombu Dojo?
I was told that Fukakusa Sensei of Thailand was promoted to 8th Dan.

That's correct, Rommel.
Congratulations to Fukakusa shihan, Prapant sensei and Suwannee sensei of Thai Aikikai.

Re: Kagami Biraki Promotions 2011
It seems like there are six names on the 8th dan promotion list.
Anyone who can read Japanese can tell us their names?
And on this occasion, I'd like to congratulate Jay Dunkelman sensei on his promotion to 6th dan. Jay is a sempai and a friend of my teacher. We were privileged to have him visit the dojo a few years ago. He has conducted a wonderful and memorable practice.

Re: Kagami Biraki Promotions 2011
Congratulations.
A question, if you don't mind:
I see Tiki Shewan listed both as 6th and 5th dan. A mistake or different persons with the same (uncommon, I believe) name?

Well, along with him there seem to be a whole bunch of students of Tamura Sensei being promoted to grades that are the same (or actually lower) than the ones that used to be given on their French website when I last looked.

I only know Katsuyuki Shimamoto sensei. He is the sensei of my sensei. Here is a video from a seminar in Israel: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ynt92wWNn2A
I participated in a seminar he gave in the Netherlands last october. AFAIK he also gives seminars in Poland.

Re: Kagami Biraki Promotions 2011
Why are there only a handful of promotions to shodan while half the Aikidoka on earth apparently have been promoted to godan?

Kagami Biraki promotions are all, I believe, by recommendation. Most shodans get promoted by testing, but from godan up it's by recommendation only.
Best,
Chris

Aloha Chris,
Yours was a Godan by recommendation, but I happen to know that you truly earned it as well by your daily conduct, devotion to Ueshiba Aiki, and your fierce loyalty to maintaining Aikido's integrity.
Omedetoo Gozaimashita!

Re: Kagami Biraki Promotions 2011
Hello,
I wish I had seen this when it was originally posted. Suwannee Sensei of Thailand was my teacher for two or three years. She saw me struggling to follow a rapid-fire class taught by multiple teachers, and took me under her wing in the classes she taught. Her patient, step-by-step instruction allowed me to stay with Aikido, and I am still training, 14 years after leaving Thailand. I'm grateful for her contribution to my training, and pleased to learn of her promotion to Godan. I hope I can see her and Fukakusa Shihan some day. Belated congratulations, Fukakusa Shihan, Ahjahn Prapant, Ahjahn Suwanee, and Ahjahn Pisuttiwad.
Paul in Seattle
