Hey Dallas,
I wasn't limiting my reply to sex, the Kama Sutra is not just a sex book, but is actually meant to deepen a relationship.... however, wait a while before checking it out, OK ![Smilie](images/smilies/smile.gif) ? I was instead saying that 'Aikido is Love' is not meant to encourage any sort of romance within the dojo, but means 'love' in a platonic way... (you may, if so desired, read anything by Plato ![Big Grin](images/smilies/biggrin.gif) )... one reason teachers don't do such a great job of teaching 'love' or 'romance' vs. the biology of reproduction is they are often prevented by school rules, or they themselves are still trying to figure it out, or both. I'd look to parents or ministers for advice on romance ...
and yes, we usually recycle our topics...
Everyone else, uh, who is Orlando Bloom?

Hi all,
Well I hope I am about to put a smile in to this thread! ![Smilie](images/smilies/smile.gif) 3 weeks on Saturday I marry my fiancee who I met through Aikido.
I am an instructor and when we met she was a blue belt student. I am from England (where I started my Aikido and got my black belt), but run a dojo in Germany, and she is from Poland, where she trained in one of our dojo. Now we are together in Germany, she is now a brown belt (not graded by me and never will be!!!) and the assistant instructor in my dojo, not to mention the light of my life.
I would say it was easier for us because we were not in the same dojo, also, now she has the standing of brown belt, she is more empowered, so it helps in maintaining the equality of the relationship, although, when it comes to the dojo I have to be the boss. She makes up for it at home though!
The worst things are when people don't follow up on relationships because it is not the done thing, and more so, those who use a position to aquire their next conquest!!! ![Frown](images/smilies/frown.gif) This later I know of and it was so bad they were thrown out of the school!
If you both feel it, go for it. What could be worse than feeling "what if?" for the rest of you life?
Best Wishes!
Osu

My girlfriend - we live together - and I both practice Aikido at the same dojo. We started at the same time. I've got a bit more experience, as she had to take a few months off due to surgery and has a work schedule that can be erratic and prevent her from going to class.
We leave our relationship off the mat as much as possible. In fact, our Sensei didn't realize that we were a couple until we had been training for a few months.
I don't see how anyone could object to this...

Totally off topic..Sorry!
Hi Colleen, just got back from a business trip and saw your post including an invitation to read anything by Plato. I read the last days of Socrates by Plato and from his descriptions of Socrates's conversations it's no wonder they poisoned the tedious git!!
Have fun.

For a long time I worked out with a married couple. Then they relocated. Saw them again at the Expo. Still great. They seem to leave their married status at the door, work out with everyone, and remember they are friends too. Go figure.
Until again,

I think what it all boils down to is, you can't generalize anything, but have to analyze each situation. Before our dojo split up about a year ago now, we had 3 couples training. One married, started at the same time with their training.
Here is one possible problem with a couple being of the same rank:
The married couple were both testing for 2nd Kyu. They had always tested at the same time (to the best of my knowledge) and always been same rank. Now the wife, who was "dragged" into Aikido by her husband, after two years of training looked much better than her husband did with technique. Although lacking some intensity, she in my eyes, probably did well enough to pass her test. Her husband however, was a complete disaster on his test. He didn't know terms, he stopped in the middle of testing to start over. (Which is a huge no-no in our Dojo!) All in all it was the absolute worst test I have ever seen in my life, not including a beginner's test. But of course, he was passed. Most likely he was passed because of his wife passing, and with the area I live in, it is still rather patriarchal here, and "the man" is to be strong, and the leader, yada yada yada.
I know this individual would not have passed had he not been married to this person that looked so much better than him with technique.
Just one problem I see, jealousy if someone gets "ahead" when you were both equal.
The Dojo split a few weeks later, and I no longer train with this couple. I did however train with them at a seminar, and it was still the same thing. He should never have been 2nd Kyu. Even after being 2nd Kyu for a year, he still look horrible. She however looks like she could be a 2nd Kyu in her technique.
