Save Billy Wolfe. a bullied Fayetteville High School student
An article on nytimes.com/danbarry tells and illustrates the story of Billy Wolfe, a 15 year old, who has been the target of bullies for 3 years. He is why I have joined this site. Can some one in the Fayetteville, Arkansas area start giving him Aikido training if he is open to it? You might be saving his life as well as others.

Re: Save Billy Wolfe. a bullied Fayetteville High School student
Sounds like the real problem is with the school administration and school board. I'm all for teaching kids aikido, but it should not take the place of adult supervision and responsibility. Adults need to provide a safe place for kids to be educated. If that's not happening, the adults in that community should be held accountable.

Hence the lawsuit, but it wouldn't hurt the kid to learn how to make himself less worthwhile a target. The trick is whether he opens his mouth about it, which would only serve to draw fire, and maybe a lot. Kids can be vicious. "Bullying" is too innocuous a term anymore.

I'm sure (I hope) you meant that tongue in cheek. One of the issues we face internationally, nationally, and locally, is the escalation of violence. It is not a small issue...you teach the kid karate/MMA/aikido whatever, he kicks someone's butt, they come back with a gun. Or multiple friends. Or a dufus of a parent with buds along for the ride raid the school cafeteria looking for the target (don't laugh, this just happened recently).
He pulls a gun he goes to jail. Escalating violence in the face of such threats was a time honored way of defending yourself from bullies...they pushed, you hit. Now, the upper limits and the consequences are much different. It really isn't a joking matter...I would hate to be going to school now, faced with the situations kids are facing. Adults need to step up big time.
Best,
Ron (I remember you had some experience in this area with your son, correct?)

Yes Ron, it was indeed toungue in cheek. I agree with your statement completely. As I said in my first post; the adults in that community need to step up to the plate and demand safe schools. If they don't stop the violence now it will surely spread like cancer into their community at large.
Besides, everyone knows you can't defend yourself with aikido. ![Big Grin](images/smilies/biggrin.gif)

Re: Save Billy Wolfe. a bullied Fayetteville High School student
I agree that aikido won't help him much simply because of the time it would take to develop any kind of proficiency, but still would be a good thing for him from a psychological standpoint. I would think if he wanted to learn something that would be effective quickly, krav maga would be a better choice since it was designed with rapid proficiency and effectiveness in mind. Still, neither side really learns anything other than that superior firepower is the answer to all problems.
That said, perhaps we're looking at this from the wrong angle. Maybe it might be better to put the bullies into aikido, with emphasis on the aiki way of living more than on the technique?

Re: Save Billy Wolfe. a bullied Fayetteville High School student
Am I reading that last article wrong, or does it seem that a long time bully got what was coming to him (and from several different people), and now is striking back out by suing them?
I know it's hard (or impossible) to determine who is the guilty party from reading a few news articles. I'm raising my kids to be able to deal with bullies - and to stand up for others who can't. I was picked on by bullies in grade school - I don't want my sons to go through what I did.

Yea, sounds to me like this kid got exactly what was coming to him, now he's upset.
