Jo,

Try copying and pasting the kanji into the following form:

http://www.csse.monash.edu.au/~jwb/c...wwwjdic.cgi?1B

You might need to select "Kanji (cut-and-paste or IM)" in the drop-down, but the default "Japanese On or KUN reading (Kana or Romaji)" seems to work.

To answer your question, the term basically means "section" (as in an "IT section" or "accounting section" of a company) or "club" (as in a "fencing club" or "music club" at a school).
