Reishiki

Reishiki -- etiquette
As ephemeral as reishi -
Spirit particles
But, just as necessary
To the art as kata or randori

Respect, courtesy, honor
The very spirit behind
What we practice
Without these attributes
We are just thugs

Practicing ways to
Kill and maim each other
Reishiki gives us pause
A bow, a nod, an acknowledgement
That we enter into a mutually

Agreed upon quest, a path
With a certain risk and reward
But, also with a certain trust
A trust that is recognized
In that brief bow, that brief nod

That however hard we practice
We do so under the banner
Of etiquette -- actualizing
The very spirit of the art
Not just the form
