Small effective movement. The Aikido taught in the 1950s by Kenshiro Abbe Sensei was very tight and short movement such as this, he was a high ranking Judoka, I found that most of the early Aikido teachers I trained with had initially studied Judo - Kenshiro Abbe - Tadashi Abe - Masahilo Nakazono - TK Chiba - I often read where people say " there is no kicking and punching in Aikido " - in those early days, they all taught to kick and punch, as I still do.
I think this illustrates some strategic points about unplanned encounters:
1) Surprise is effective
2) Surprise is enhanced by not reciprocating initial aggression
3) A surprised aggressor has poor ukemi
4) An unanticipated fall is psychologically debilitating
5) Unprepared ukemi likely ends up with the head striking the ground, and is physically disorienting.

6) A relatively calm demeanor throughout the encounter makes the assailant/target (can't really apply "victim" in this case) relationship abundantly clear, which will be very handy when the police are interviewing witnesses and deciding what to do with you.
