Aloha!

Greetings from Honolulu, Hawaii.

I will soon be returning to Aikido after having been away from the art for about six years. Aikido was my first martial art, and I trained for four years before having to take a break from my training (I was working two jobs to put myself through graduate school, so it was impossible to make the dojo's training schedule). I teach Jeet Kune Do and also practice Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu on a regular basis.

Aloha,
James McRae

Re: Aloha!

I've been to hawaii twice, once as talent for the "Jackie Chan Aloha Tour" and once for my honeymoon. Once you've been there every place else seems "off-island".

There are some Shin Budo Kai people out there I hear.

I believe there is a Shin Budo Kai dojo on the Big Island, but I've never had the opportunity to go there (the dojo that is; I've been to the Big Island ). All of my Aikido training so far has been with Ki-Aikido (Tohei Sensei's organization) and ASU (Saotome Sensei's organization). From what I understand, Hawaii has the largest population of martial artists (per capita) of any state in the USA. As a result, there are dozens of great places to cross-train.

Aloha,
James

Re: Aloha!

James, I believe John Stevens Sensei teaches in Hawaii, at least part of the time. If he's nearby, you should train some with him. It's an opportunity not many of us gets, and there are aspects of Aikido that few can teach better than he. I understand he recently was promoted to 7th Dan at Hombu, and I can't think of anyone more deserving. His books should be required reading.

Thumbs down Re: Aloha!

Thanks, Clark. I'll be sure to find out more information about Stevens Sensei's dojo. I have several of his books and agree that they should be on every Aikidoka's shelf.

Mahalo,
James

John Stevens does spend time on Oahu, but he hasn't been active here in quite some time. He used to visit The Aikido Ohana, but he hasn't been there in a few years. There's a fairly comprehensive list of Hawaiian Aikido dojo on the Aikido Hawaii website.

Best,

Chris
