Aikido options in Indonesia -Any Tomiki?

Hi folks,

Are there any J.A.A. affiliated (Tomiki or Shodokan) schools existent in Indonesia at present? The dojo search brings nothing up. I was hoping someone who lives there may have an idea.

In the event there are no J.A.A. affiliated dojos, what is available?

There is an IYAF/Yoshinkan dojo registered in Indonesia. Here are the details I have.

In other news, Dan Brown is writting a new book about how a mystical figure in japan become the leader of a large cult that controls the world. You see, all the infighting and name calling in Aikido are just a feight to fool the uninitiated (the so called kyuless) into believing that Aikido is not one. I knew of the Yoshinkan dojos there but I did not want my student who is migrating to pick up any bad Yoshin-Orc habits. The Shodothug way is the only way.

Oh well I guess the issue of rank transfer is null and void now.

Man, I did a seminar in Canada some years back. The one and only time in my life that I ever trained with socks on (my toes refused to comply otherwise). That was one helluva cold dojo.

Larry, there's always "Tarung Derajat." Closest thing to Shodokan that I've seen here...

Larry - why not swing north to Japan - I assume you are planning a trip.

I'm not planning my Japan trip yet. I have a 3rd kyu student who is migrating to Indonesia for a few years and would like to continue training in Shodokan and continue at his rank without having to restart at white belt somewhere else. I can inform him of the Japan option, but he will probably have to make periodic visits instead of attending regular training sessions. If there are no Shodokan schools there the only option will be to train at another style or do another art. I don't know if he'll be up to starting a Shodokan study group there.

John: What is "Tarung Derajat"? Sounds nasty.

Hi Larry, "Tarung Derajat" is basically full contact kickboxing with light gloves. Apparently no throws or kicks below the belt allowed, so matches tend to look like bad kung fu movies. A little swipe at Shodokan competition...

I can vouch for the Yoshinkan dojo in Bandung; Mark's a good guy. I'm also open to being tossed on my butt by a Shodothug if your student is down around these parts.

Well... I wouldn't know about that since our competition practice looks more like a good samurai movie. Thanks for the info though.

I will keep that in mind as an option. I'm also thinking of having him take up Silat while there if he can't train in Aikido for any reason.

The Shudokan folks look like the best bet so far. Is there an option in/near the Jakarta area?

There are 40 Aikikai dojos listed here. Looks like at least 20 dojos in or near Jakarta.

Reading some of the comments here are taken tongue in cheek..... Of course Shodo thuggery is the best!! .....the nearest you'll get to combat without too much risk and better than indulging in mock samurai drama where we all throw ourselves 'cause it looks good!! We can all do that and better .....just take a look at some of the Shodokan enbu's at national and international level!! Ring a ring of roses a packet full of posers...... naaa just pulling your legs guys!!

Wow reading the dojo search for indonesia they certainly don't have any shortage of Aikikai dojos. As compared to a search of South Australia that returns one Aikikai and two others

I spend way too much time considering things if I have a large selection of choices.
Say something as simple as going to subway freaks me out because there is too much choice. Having to think about which of the 30 fillings I want and then if I want it toasted or not, It's just so overwhelming.

At some point I just cut my mind off from the decision and basically pick stuff at random otherwise I would be there all day considering the options. Either that or If I am leaning towards something I "lock it in" so I can't change my mind about it anymore.

Thanks for the link Jorge. Definitely a lot to check out.

We're hoping to find something that is not too different from what he did here, hopefully he'll find one soon. I'm recommending Shudokan (being Yoshinkan) as first preference from my own research so far however.
