Plans for New Year?

Just wondering... What do various people/dojos do for New Year? My "home" dojo (Long Island Aikikai) does a class ("etsunengeiko") on 12/31 from 11:30pm until 12:30am (1/1), with a meditation portion right about midnight.

How about everyone else?

Ukiah Aikido does a Jan. 1 blessing of the dojo followed by misogi at a local lake or pond. I am writing an article about it for our local paper and will share it afterwards.

Shrine activities have grown large enough to require more focus on preparing for people visiting for hatsumode (first shrine visit of the year), but we used to have a special evening keiko followed by midnight misogi.

New Years eve day -- 2015 cuts. Soon after New Years, Misogi. A week after that, pot luck party...

New Year's Eve at 6 pm is misogi: 108 shomenuchi ikkyo as uke and nage with a partner, then anywhere from 4 each to 10 each with everyone else who attended. Afterwards we drink beer and sake and whatever else is going, and eat toshikoshi soba. This December 31st will be our dojo's 10th year anniversary, so we have invited other dojos as well -- we're hoping for a big turnout!

I'll get a group together and do 365 break falls and drink sake on new years day. The dojo doesn't do anything outside of an OSoji before the holiday shutdown. OSoji includes judo, jujitsu, karate, and iaido students all together in one class where we do aspects of every martial art - both kids and adults (though we've been debating having separate adult and kids classes of a couple years, just haven't implemented it. The after class cleaning tends to take about twice as long with all the littler dragon and power dragon helpers, lol). After class is a pizza, scotch and sake party while we watch martial arts videos and socialize with each other.

We are having our regular Thursday night class at 6:30.

News Years Day morning training session followed by a short demo by the kids class. Then we potluck and family is invited as well.

We do a New Year's Day class at 10 am, take out the bottle of sake that's in our kamiza, put a new bottle in, and then have a potluck. Depending on the previous night's festivities, some folks just watch or come to the potluck, but usually we have a good turnout.
