Dan Inosanto Quote

Sifu Kevin Seaman posted this quote by Sifu Dan Inosanto on Facebook:

"The goal of the martial arts is not for the destruction of an opponent, but rather for self-growth and self-perfection. The practice of a martial art should be a practice of love - for the preservation of life, for the preservation of body, and for the preservation of family and friends."

- Sifu Dan Inosanto

Re: Dan Inosanto Quote

Inosanto is such an inspiring figure. If you've ever wondered where Bruce Lee's training would have led him if he didn't die at such a young age I think it's safe to say it would have resembled Inosanto's development as such a well-rounded martial artist.

Re: Dan Inosanto Quote

I will listen to Sifu Inosanto anytime.

I have had the pleasure of training with him too, and he walks his talk.

Many of us in FMA/JKD see him in BL, not the other way around.

Truly one of the greats.

Listen up people.

Re: Dan Inosanto Quote

Dan is a great MAer who can deliver and a great guy.

While I agree with the well worn premise, (it's been around for hundreds of years folks) people often confuse it to mean there is no need to be martially relevant. It is a very different thing to have someone who can truly deliver say that, instead of someone who couldn't stop a fly from eating their lunch....
One is profound, the other inane.
Quoting great sayings makes us all sound well read and educated, but many times we are just borrowing the credibility of others with no real understanding of the foundations of the ideas. It's like listening to someone pontificating over Katsujinken/Satsujinken and then putting a sword in their hand. If you cannot deliver, or understand what it takes to get there, then the idea of a life giving or saving sword has no meaning for you...it's all just words.
Dan

Michael Gallagher, do you happen to know when that quote was first said by Sifu Dan Inosanto?

I got your private message, but could not reply. I will send a message to my old instructor tonight.
