From Ikkyo to Gokyo

When regarding specific kihon waza including ikkyo, nikyo, and sankyo, how would you get into these techniques from a yokomenuchi attack?

It will be interesting to read all the views on this!

I did not include yonkyo and gokyo to cut down on the amount of typing you might have to do and for the simple observation that to get into these is basically the same as ikkyo. One might say that all these tecniques start out that way which is true in the simplest form, but nikyo and sankyo has some distinct other possibilities.

Not very advanced yet in my own training, but here is my first "grab" at it.

yokomenuchi attack...(right hand)

tenshin with block (left hand) - atemi with right. continue to bring right hand over the attacking arm as the left slows the attack by blending.

grasp hand as in ikyo versus the lapel grab ..

(katatori?) and open the hips to your right to take balance and perform ikyo in the standard omote version. (or ura, if you prefer)

I have no doubt that there are MANY ways a more sophisticated aikidoka could achieve this, but I am not too "opinionated" to allow the differances.

It is also very cool to use your atemi hand to manifest the technique from the uke's blocking hand.

(I am not very smooth with the move yet, but my Sensei, John Riggs, does this often, and with the kind of fluid grace that I have come to trust and admire)



I love to hear other options tho, it seems I have a tough time "getting it" from descriptions...

About as visually oriented as it gets.

The way I do sankyo from yokomen is to enter with irimi, deliver atemi to uke's face with my right hand, blend at the yokomen hands wrist with my leftwrist and then reach over and take the hand in sankyo with my right hand and apply the technique.

For ikkyo blend with the attacking hand and follow inside of uke in a circular movement until you have redirected his yokomen past you. Still keeping contact then apply tenkan ikkyo.

I dont know about nikyo, it's a technique i would never apply to a yokomen unless told to do. Much easier to project someone with a shionage/kaitenage/sumiotoshi or something.

I believe yonkyo could be applied in the same way as the sankyo accept of course applying yonkyo instead of sankyo

Alternatively you can grab ukes fingers and push them back into him so that he has to drop to the floor or have his fingers broken and then apply yonkyo onto his unprotected arm.

Thats the way I do em, seems to work.

For ikkyo:

As uke raises hand for yokomenuchi, quickly enter towards the striking hand before it gets past uke's center. Block high. Duck under and pivot. Should put you right behind them for ikkyo.

Footwork would be, with both of you with right foot forward:

1) Uke strikes with right hand

2) Nage steps with left foot forward to block

3) Nage steps with right foot forward, under uke's arm

4) Nage turns on feet and brings left foot back

5) Ikkyo
