As I would/will do, if I came/when I come to Himeji. Occasionally, I take it off in the hot summer months when we do jiyu-waza during free practice in the university dojo.

My scepticism about the intrinsic danger of the hakama is based partly on the fact that M Ueshiba was never seen without one (except when he was in military uniform) and appeared to have had no trouble with it, no matter what kind of training he undertook.

Good point Goldsbury-san.

The Japanese budo system has long required the use of hakama. They had no trouble with it then, why are we having trouble with it now? Even traditional jujutsu wore hakama in their practice back then, and they do grappling.

P.S.: Japan in this case does not include Okinawa. ;p Just in case people going to put Karate/Okinawa-te/Shorinji-kenpo into the argument.

Broke a finger from a sudden ukemi after getting my foot caught in a partners hakama. Luckily it wasn't the middle one so my powers of expression weren't disabled.

Whos fault? Mine (bad ukemi), partners (senior), hakamas? Irrelelavent really, I'd look at in in terms of risk asessment. I.e. Does the benefit of crossing the road outweigh the risk of getting hit by a bus? I'd admit its difficult weighing safety and tradition, but traditions should be careully considered from time to time.

In the end I sued my foot.
