Who is this uke?
A clip of Saotome at a friendship exhibition a ways back. Dude has crazy good ukemi, imo. And that thing he does at 1:05. Dang.

Not sure, but it looks like it might be Don Moock.

No. My guess is that it's the late Frank Bell, but I am not sure.

I did exactly that last week in an attempt not to kick somebody who stepped in my way. My foot still hurts!
No idea who the uke is. Sorry.

Definitely not Frank Bell or Don Mock. 98% certainty Peter has the right I.d. on the uke.

Re: Who is this uke?
That was no uke. That was a Jedi. I didn't know a person could do that. It literally looked like the film was reversed.

Re: Who is this uke?
@greg--didn't know I'd get this old.
@Mark--No, but I've seen the logo. My Hispanic students delight in my name; it's like they're always calling me Sir Modesto.

Re: Who is this uke?
So, how did you do that thing without breaking your metatarsals? And is your upper body made out of antigravity? The mechanical advantage for that particular movement is really low.

I don't recommend it. I used to love lying back in SEIZA and just feeling the stretch. It wasn't until decades after I started doing it that I realized it was hurting my knees. When I stopped doing it, my knees stopped hurting.
But, fwiw, it was a combination of two practices. 1) Sitting up while lying in SEIZA; 2) learning to control various stages of that back arch which I did through UKEMI for SHIHOO NAGE. Get the proper momentum with the inital rise, and the rest of it just sort of comes. The first time I did it I surprised myself.
