Aikido Socks?
Has anyone here ever herd of Aikido socks?
I know I came across them a long time ago but I cannot remember where. I certainly would like feedback on anyone who has used them. Also if anyone knows where to get them, that would be smashing. We have a students who could benefit from them.
Thanks,
Andrew

Re: Aikido Socks?
The only thing I can think of that could possibly be called 'Aikido socks' would be the split toe Tabi socks that can be worn with thongs (flip flops for you non-Aussies )
They can probably be bought at martial arts supply shops, do a google search on 'Tabi Socks' and you'll get plenty of results.
Edit: Gah... there something in this room make me not speak good!

There's a saying:
'In Australia, a group of people in black rubber thongs isn't as interesting as it sounds'
Some bright spark probably looked at it and said 'hey, that looks like a thong for your foot'. When speaking to other people I try to use flip flop or jandle... saves on what could turn into a horrible misunderstanding

Fundoshi plus Elastic minus many yards of fabric equals thong.

I was sure I seen some socks before that had some sorta grips on the bottom of them so they could be worn on matts and you wouldent slip.
I think they were also tabi ones.

Ranging in price from 500 yen to around 3,000 yen, Mitsukoshi's Ginza branch sold 441 fundoshi in April and some 800 in May. Sales had been about 80 a month prior to the loincloth's sudden revival, according to store officials.
"Women seem to be buying them for their boyfriends and friends," said Yoshimi Shuma, manager of the men's clothing section. "Non-Japanese customers and Japanese planning to go overseas also buy them as souvenirs."
Many businessmen are buying fundoshi as "power underwear" to wear when they want good results at work.

If you can find them, the matching socks that Nike makes for its Air Rift line of shoes are the best tabi socks I've encountered.
They're actually up to Western standards of softness, elasticity and absorbency, something I haven't found in any Japanese brand.
But they're not easy to find....

Re: Aikido Socks?
Perhaps I should have said "hard to find at a reasonable price."

Re: Aikido Socks?
The House of Rice has a few choices, and at some of the more reasonable prices on the net.
Bronson
p.s. Follow their measuring instructions carefully and don't forget the cotton tabi will shrink when washed.

Re: Aikido Socks?
People here talk about tabi socks, but why not about tabi themselves? I've actually heard of a dojo where they used tabi. Osensei is wearing tabi on some of the old films... Cotton tabi with leather underneath should work fine. I don't think they are easy to find, though.

Tozando (Japan)
BoguBag (US) - on the fourth row
Eurobogu (the European distributer for Koei--same stuff as BoguBag) should have them as well. I'm sure there are plenty of other places that sell them as well. Check out kendo suppliers.

Re: Aikido Socks?
Perhaps you could apply these:
http://www.fleming.flump.net/~webofw...od=249&xSec=36.
to some existing tabi socks. Or use puffy paint to make them grippy.
If you're not after tabi ones, could you use slipper socks?
