75 Movement Jo Kata

Can someone tell me some details about the 75 Movement Jo Kata. Who created it and when? Any other details about it?
John Stevens Sensei has a great DVD out on Misogi where He demonstrates the kata. I would appreciate any feedback.

Re: 75 Movement Jo Kata

Hi Randy,

It was created by Rinjiro Shirata. There are probably clips of him doing the kata over at aikidojournal.com during All Japan demonstrations in Tokyo. Allan Beebe probably has the most definitive info on the kata of those who regularly post here. I do know that Shirata Sensei continued to tweak it up until his death and that what Stevens Sensei teaches is the last version.

Re: 75 Movement Jo Kata

There is a book, a slim dark blue volume, entitled Misogi, which was produced to mark the 60th Anniversary of the establishment of the Hombu Dojo (1930) and the 50th Anniversary of its recognition by the governmwnt (1940). The book was produced as a commemoration of the 14th Demonstration by the aikido federations in the Tohoku region of Japan. On pp.50-55, there is a detailed description (実習口伝) of the 75 movements of Misogi-no-jo and the 45 movements of Misogi-no-ken. The book appeared in May, 1992, almost one year to the day before Shirata Sensei passed away.

Unfortunately, the book is written in Japanese and is not generally available, though you might have heard of it. I would think that John Stevens and Allen Beebe both have copies.
