Holy cow, has anyone else seen this test yet? This was so cool.

My wife has this program on tape (or one just like it - the ken split on the eight hit), she told me about it last week (I haven't had a chance to sit down and watch it yet

Before the machine gun, they also do it with a pistol. The ken splits the pistol bullets a lot easier, but they are smaller with less power.

Thats whats so cool about this video, the fact that a katana withstood even one round from a 50. caliber machine gun is incredible, besides actually cutting some of the bullets in half.

Before even more myth gets added to the katana... Please be aware that a normal round is just a shaped ball of lead designed to deform on impact. You want your bullets to deform as much as they can because then more energy (momentum) of the bullet is transfered to the surrounding material. This is what causes horrible injuries and death. If a round hits armour, it either mushrooms and does not penetrates or "slides" of it. Some small caliber rounds can "bounce" of tree leaves let alone a blade.

Could anyone who speaks better Japanese than me check which type of round was used? If it was said.

I suspect that the same test on Damascus steel would yield a similar result. It's just a gut feeling mind as I have not the kit to test it. I doubt that EPSRC would fund me for it which is shame since I am unemployed because they (EPSRC) refused to fund me.

Besides, it's a not too serious clip. Just a bit of fun with no scientific/research value whatsoever. Hell, I still love it!!!

The bullets were not typical military style, i.e. they didn't appear to be jacketed or "pointy" at the business end. If anything they were pure lead semi-wadcutters (flying cylinders). Still, if they're .50 caliber that's a whole lotta energy being absorbed and split by a thin wedge of steel. I'm just wondering if this is supposed to be a marketing technique by the sword maker.

The video is fun. Don't take it for anymore than just entertainment.
