For yoshinkan vids there is a box set of all 150 basic techniques I believe. Search google for box set and yoshinkan and you should find a listing from bugendo, I think.

From my understanding -

hand movement = tegatana dosa (sp?)

foot movement = unsoko (sp?)

These are Shodokan names for these things, may be different elsewhere.

I thought hand movement was te sabaki and foot movement was ashi sabaki.

Larry

Both of the above are names for specific exercies and are not names for general movements (as in hand and foot).

Closest we have is taisabaki which of course is body movement. Unsoku is basic training for that just as tegatana dosa is basic training for the hand movments.

four directions: shiho undo

taisabaki is body movement? yes

foot movement: ashi sabaki

hand movement: te sabaki

best instructional vcd for aikikai:

- aikido basic techniques; moriteru ueshiba

- aikido; power and basics; yoshimitsu yamada

for yoshinkan: would love to have one....

Thanks for the correction Peter,

My nihongo has become very rusty of late - lack of practice.

Vincent - Yamada Sensei's Power and Basics instructional is a classic. I believe it's from the early '90's and has Donovan Waite Sensei as uke. I often just take it out and watch it late at night with Popcorn.

We practice Shomen-uchi in all four directions. Usually omote and ura come out at 180 degree throws. If you shorter or lengthen your entering, you can throw uke at 90 degree. Thus making it a throw in all four directions.

For yoshinkan dojo throughout the country (and maybe the world) search for Steven Miranda's web page on google. He's got the best listing I know of. I do know that Gil Fitz is down in North or South Carolina. www.yoshinkai.org should have him listed as an independant dojo under the doshinkan.

For the listing of the powers, check either Dynamic Aikido, or The Master's Course, by Gozo Shioda. Should be in the martial art section of any decent book store.

I onced joined in CEBU KI SOCIETY(with sensei max tian for 4 months only before i transfered to Aikido Centrum, under the leniage of Koitchi Tohi, sensei), i remembered, they were selling an instrumental cassette tapes for meditation. is it effective?

I really know squat about meditation. Used to do some with an indian group a long time ago...still know squat.

Start a new thread and ask...perhaps some people who understand that stuff will answer.

Sorry,

Ron

Some schools say don't stop the thoughts while others do the opposite. In the counting method you count to 10 with uninterrupted thoughts. If successful, go to 20 and so on. Another method is to focus on all the sounds around you then when you are settled, pick out just one to focus on, then another...

A good book is "The Beginner's Guide to Zen Buddhism" by Jean Smith. D.T. Suzuki's "Zen and Aikido" is great for it practical theories but may be hard to follow technically without instruction. Nevertheless, it's one of my favorites.
