New Aikido Commercial...
All,
Jiai Aikido has added another video to its media page: a :30 commercial demonstrating Aikido techniques, performed by the instructors and students of the dojo. It can be found here, along with other Jiai clips:
http://www.jiaiaikido.com/media.asp
Enjoy!
Sincerely,
Roy Dean

Re: New Aikido Commercial...
Pretty neat! Most of the subject matter was too low in the shots for my liking. Sort of like watching the "Muppet Show." But I'm just nitpicking.
Fun to watch, though. Thanks for the link!

Very nice commercials - way cool. Nice lighting, editing, good music selection, etc. - nice technique, etc. Thanks for sharing.

Re: New Aikido Commercial...
Only looked at the grappling commercial -- was that the one you meant? -- and it looked good. I'll have to peak at the others eventually.

They all looked very good. It appears from the video that you all have a very solid program there in San Diego.

I didn't like the news broadcast of Aikido...in my opinion it was a very negative spin...

Re: New Aikido Commercial...
The comercial was VERY well done. I wouldn't let that news room back into the dojo again though. I think that would have scared more poeple away from Aikido than attracted them.

Re: New Aikido Commercial...
The guy doing the sankyo (nage) appeared to be moving in a counter clock wise motion in a "walking" fashion. I usually plant my leading foot and pivot with the other. Other than this, it looked fantastic! If my observation was wrong or it is not the way your dojo teaches, I appologize with humble sincereity. Christmas is almost here!!!!!!

Some of the comments they came out with were very negative. "does that look like fun to you?" "no." yeah, cheers mate, just cos you don't like aikido doesn't mean that it's all bad. Should invite them back and give them a kicking.
On the whole though, the commercials were very well done.

Aikido doesn't work? My Aikido works, what on earth are you practicing?!

Re: New Aikido Commercial...
Thanks for all the supportive replies! Roy did a great job editing this for us and it was his idea to put it together.
At Jun's suggestion we've posted a downloadable higher quality version of the video on the site in addition to the streaming version.
As to some of the specific comments...

His adventure news segments are all edited to make it look like he get's it rough, and the fellow news people always razz him. He was a good sport and actually did pretty well.
It does bring up something I always struggle with in doing demos for potential students though. Do you show them some hard stuff to inspire/impress or does it make it look to difficult and scary. On the other hand it's too easy for aikido to come off looking faked and fluffy.

Just an illusion based on the uke's movement and not seeing the nage's feet.

Thanks Lynn, Ikeda sensei is scheduled to come out again March 3-5, 2006. I'll post the details to aikiweb as we get them ready.

Re: New Aikido Commercial...
Jeff,
You guys looked really good. The key is exposure and the news broadcast gave you that. The dojo looked good and the techniques did too. I think that doing all you can do is best because people are inspired by the highs and not the lows. That's why so many people get into martial arts because of watching movies. No matter how unrealistic or fantastic, they come in because they see themselves doing that.

Re: New Aikido Commercial...
That really is a great website. The videos are great. I especially liked the part of the demonstration on where I heard someone say "oh s***" That was pretty funny, as I say that to myself alot too.

Re: New Aikido Commercial...
by the way, on the video "USD Demo" what is the technique that looks like iriminage or tenchinage but finishes with what looks like a leg sweep as nage steps behind uke? I like that one!

Re: New Aikido Commercial...
I'd probably say mentsuki ashi barai, though you could probably call it a variation on sumi otoshi or kokyunage.
