Saving a Tinted Gi

Have you ever found that you accidently washed a bright red sock with your sparkling while dogi? That's exactly what happened to me this morning and I ended up with a beautiful pink gi. Bleach and vinegar had no effect and I fully expected to be buying two new gi.

My wife knew of a product that actually worked! Rit brand Color Remover is a powdered product that you can throw into the wash with the tinted garment and it will actually make it bright white again. I don't know if it is available outside the United States. She bought it at one of the big chain drug stores here locally. At less than $ 4.00, it was a lot cheaper than replacing the two gi.

Since I'm sure that I'm not the only one stupid enough to do this, I thought it might prove helpful to someone else.

Re: Saving a Tinted Gi

We had a dojo member who we called "pink gi Robert" because he washed his gi with a sock. But thanks for the tip. I wonder if it would work on gi that have been "blued" by the indigo dye from their hakamas. Because we have a "blue gi Mike", too.

Tried it in a blue gi per hakama wash.. It lightened it but did not eliminate the tint. More confederate gray now. Not that there's anything wrong with that...

Can't speak to the indigo dye issue as I haven't washed my gi and my Wranglers at the same time - yet. The instructions say that one shouldn't use it on denim materials though.

If "Blue Gi Mike" threw his hakama in the washing machine with his gi, I bet he has a wonderful looking hakama. (more like a denim bag by now?) Or does this guy know how to iron a hakama from scratch? Must be an origami master.
e ya later
Jill.

Oh, he didn't throw his hakama into the wash with his gi. His gi is just blue from wearing his hakama for the first few times when the indigo just rubs off on everything -- your hands, gi (top and bottom), belt, dojo mat, etc. But now he has a couple of gis that are still pretty blue.

Re: Saving a Tinted Gi

One of my dojomates washed her gi with a purple t-shirt... and then started wearing said t-shirt to class under her gi. Colour coordination you see. Now that the gi has faded she went and threw the t-shirt in the wash with the gi again...

We're pretty informal, but she has had some comments at seminars...
