How Aikido saved my life.

Hi there i have a myriad of health problems, not the least of which is a severe Bi-Polar disorder. For those of you who do not know what that is, i will sum it up like this you have manic episodes, and depressive episodes.

My Manic episodes are getting easier to deal with because i can identify them and fight them to some degree. However my depressions are another story all together.

I have been dealing with depression for about 20 years now, and they get really bad and deep, sometimes lasting for months on end.
These episodes have greatly hampered my progression in Aikido, at least on a physical level. That being said taking Aikido off the mat i have been greatly bouyed over the years. Be it reading about Aikido or doing some breathing excersises and the like.

I would be lying if i said that ending my life hasnt been a prevalent thought of mine for years, but this is where Aikido has helped me greatly. It has given me strength to get through the tough times, even though i may not train on the mat, just the philosophy of it has great attributes for me. This is how Aikido has saved my life, on many occasions.

I was wondering if anyone else has had any of the same benefits as i have, and would like to share.

Brian

Re: How Aikido saved my life.

Hi Brian.
I have been in such similar situations myself I know how you feel. Depression is something I know very well. Almost too well. Also the thought of ending life. Yes I've been there a few times as well. I'm glad your still here I know how hard a battle that can be to fight. And its not an easy thing to share with others so we often fight it alone.

I cant say Aikido saved me. But I have to say I think it will help me find an accept my true self and learn to live rather than just survive.

Thanks for sharing - that took a lot of courage. I'm just at the start of my aiki journey but it's clear that Aikido has tremendous benefits both on and off the mat.

It's nice to see this thread appearing and re-appearing in slightly different forms; looking at the positive aspects of aikido in people's lives.

Can't say my journey's been anything like as traumatic as yours, Brian, but I can say that my life is better when I'm practicing regularly.

Onegaishimasu. The dojo, for me, has always been a refuge; even if I am the only one there. I think it is because you "meet yourself" there.

In gassho,

Mark

Wow. I am glad to hear that aikido has made such a profoundly positive impact on your life. It is always so nice to hear how martial arts has changed someones life for the better. I know it took courage to tell your story and I also commend you for that. Keep up the good work!
