Yes, some of those premium rums are very brandy or cognac-like. The Santa Teresa I linked to is the first (only?) rum made using the "Solera" method of cascading oak barrels. As far as scotch I only knew blends. My friend who moved to Scotland recently introduced me to single malt and now I have to buy more stuff... not good for the wallet.

As for scotch....I'm sorry, I was the odd one out at many an aikido-l seminar party because to me any differences between these ambrosial single malts they all oohd and ahhd over were, to me, like distinguishing between kerosene and sterno....feh. Y'all can keep it.
