"Honored Teacher" on Shinichi Suzuki Sensei of Maui, H

Posted 2007-12-24 09:47:51 by Jun Akiyamano
News URL: http://www.mauinews.com/news/2007/12...teach1223.html

This article entitled "Honored Teacher" describes Shinichi Suzuki sensei of the Hawaii Ki Foundation who has been teaching aikido to Maui police recruits for over 20 years. From the article: "That was the only training we had for self-defense -- Sensei Suzuki. He taught us everything from using a baton to wrist holds. For all those years, he was the use-of-force training for the department. [...] He built your confidence in doing this job, even when you had to go up against more than one person or someone bigger than you. That's what it meant to me as an officer."

Quote:
Suzuki Sensei, an expert in aikido, began his police career in 1940 and trained officer recruits in the art of self-defense from 1953 until this year. Due to newer tactics in training, recruits will no longer have the aikido class in their curriculum.
Kind of sad. Passing of an era.

I wonder what the "newer" tactics are supposed to be.
