hella big gi
I start aikido classes in January, but the gi came with my enrollment fee. I'm about 5'9" and 150-160 lbs, and I was given a size 5 Sun brand premium judo gi.
I know it's 100% cotton and all, but I am thinking my sensei got the wrong one off the shelf. I haven't washed it yet (i want to make sure it's the right size first, so i can get a smaller one if it's not), and wearing the jacket, with arms relaxed at my side, the cuffs of the sleeves reach the ends of my thumbs. That can't be right?
Sensei told me that when I put it on I would think essentially what I'm thinking now, but he assured me that it would shrink and last me a long time. I'm thinking this thing would have to shrink a helluva lot to be the right size for me, but what do I know?
I have no experience with this brand, or gis at all for that matter, and I was just curious what some people thought about this.

Re: hella big gi
Mine was about that big on me when I first got it (except It's a size six since I'm a monster), but they actually shrink a lot the first time you wash them.

Re: hella big gi
Wash it on hot, you may be surprised....
Mine seemed way too long when I bought it, so I hemmed up the sleeves to a comfortable fit. About a dozen washings later, they were too short (and too worn to un-hem, alas). Now they're up near my elbows!
One of our first kyu students came to class last night looking very embarrassed. He's preparing for shodan and wanted to look spiffy, so he washed his white belt--just washed, air dry. Now it barely goes around him anymore.

Re: hella big gi
My dogis are all monster long when they first come out of the bag. Wash it on hot, run it through the dryer at regular if it's really bad, and it should be where you need it in a couple washings. It's worked for every dogi I've had, although, as usual, YMMV.

Re: hella big gi
Don't wash it too hot or you will be wearing lycra.

I don't think there is any lycra in it.
