Seza in Hakama Etiquette?

Hello to everyone...

Can anyone tell me the proper etiquette/method for sitting Seza while wearing a Hakama? I.e. clearing the Hakama from feet and knees etc. (a video clip link, would be great) I remember a teacher of mine do it while I was in the military, but that was long ago. I remember it being somewhat ceremonial. I haven't seen a discussion on this yet & I'm sure others would appreciate it.

Thanks,
Whatssarong (Bob)

Re: Seza in Hakama Etiquette?

There are loads of ways of doing this. However, it was finally cleared up (in my head) when I met a kyoshi.

Tying the hakama can be done in several ways, however, I only tie mine in the bow (not the same as shoes) when I visiting a dojo or practice iai. During normal practice I tie a box knot.

When sitting, drop through the sonkyo posture (typically taught in ken schools) place your hand gently between the two halves and dont slap away but lift up so the hakama is clear of the feet when you sit and it also looks tidy and gracious. When standing you'll notice that you can actually stand rather than stumble over your feet. Worth someone showing your properly. In my humble experience koryu and ken schools seem to be superior at reigi than aikido schools.
