worried
Well there is a new student in the dojo where I train, and I am worried about him hurting himself or someone else. People attempt to correct his ukemi and he does it right once in front of the senior student or sensei, and than goes back to his old way which appears to me to be dangerous to himself. He says that he was a wrestler so he knows how to fall Also when working with him as Nage he does the same thing, he does it his way, and only does it how someone showed it to him once, than its back to his way, which is very incorrect and usually he goes to fast and too hard even with new people, I am afraid he is going to hurt someone. I am new to the dojo so I dont feel right appoaching sensei with this problem, and none of the senior students seem to notice or care...any advice would be of a great deal of help.
cheers

Re: worried
Old habits are hard to kick. Give him time to learn unless his moves are serious enough to break something. Your sensei should step in.

Re: worried
Since it has been a couple of weeks later....Has he hurt anyone yet?
If not, then he may have learned a bit more, adapted better to instruction, quit entirely, been chastened by the "powers that be"....etc.
Just curiosity, since we have all trained with this guy. (sometimes repeatedly) and have seen each of the above options happen.
Just as a passing point of comment, if he "already knows..." in his mindset, then I would wager he is either already fallen by the wayside, or will shortly.
It is hard to learn anything new if you "Already got it all knowed up" as my old country-boy grandfather always said.

I'm sure they notice. But they know, that this guy really needs to empty his cup to learn. For him the challenge is not learning to fall, but learning to fall in a different way -- perhaps even a way that's counter to what he's previously been taught. So far, he has yet to see the reason to fall a different way so he sticks to his old ways. Since your new yourself, just let it go and don't bother trying to correct him. I usually allow these folks to suffer and let them fall hard, due to the nature of their ukemi not the nage's technique, if that is what they seem bent on doing. Unfortunately, they will either not stick with it or they will long enough to pass a couple or ranks and then move on to somewhere else. However, if they do stick with it and actually empty their cup they might eventually be a good training partner.
