exercises at home
I don't always get to make it to class and I was wanting to know of any exercises I can do at home. I know most are pairs, but I would really like to do something besides "tendan undo." suggestions welcome.. obviously

Do what you'd normally do with a partner but just do it by yourself. Imagination/visualization helps. This will generate questions and a training agenda for yourself, to boot.

Re: exercises at home
That is not true. I (practice) by myself all the time and I can see just fine...but now I have to shave this embarrassing palm hair...
Joshua,
Don has some good advice. (So does Bronson I guess )
I practice this way all the time. As far as I'm concerned, training is training. I have discovered many sweet spots in my head without a partner. Also, this kind of training gives you things to "test out" during regular practice and in my opinion teaches you how to answer some of your own questions. We are all supposed to find our own Aikido.
Specifically, I just run through kata over and over. I like to pick techniques that I am having trouble with and try to focus on changing the balance breaks in my head. You will be surprised at how revealing this type of practice can be.
I work offshore on an oil production facility 7 days on and 7 days off, but I practice every day when I am offshore. I have no choice.
Hope these suggestions help.
Shane

Re: exercises at home
Hi Josh:
Of course there is always hitori waza which we practice in Shin shin toitsu aikido, and ki breathing, and walking with one point, and "bus surfing" and conflict tenkan, etc etc.
see:
http://unofficial.ki-society.org/Hitori.html
Weapons kata too. see one of our favorites:

Train on!
e ya later
Jill.

Re: exercises at home
Lots and lots of rolling, forward, backward, over and over again. There are a lot of exercises we do at the beginning of practice that do not require a partner; one of which is tenkan undo. Visualization is important. Always imagine your opponent being there.

Re: exercises at home
I really think just sitting in seiza while reading a book or watching TV is a good way to train at home.
It doesn't take a lot of room, it doesn't disturb the neighbours, it's excellent practice for balance and body control and good for mental discipline. It will also make sitting in seiza for long periods of time in the dojo while watching a test or waiting for you own test a great deal easier and safer.

Re: exercises at home
Michael is right.
I find it's easier for me to exercise my mind at home. It's fun to think about what we did last class, go over it in my head, make notes etc. Then when i get to the dojou I try to put into practice whatever i thought about.

Re: exercises at home
SImply due to you can train it with technique without a uke. But anyway I had miss out something :
you can still practice Aikido at home, as a uke :P. Just keep on practice break fall, rolling, and flip so you can be a expert uke to demo all the fancy technique; for your nage... :P
