Awesome Seminar at Yushinkan!

This past weekend, March 4-6th, the Toyoda Center/Yushinkan dojo in Grand Rapids, Michigan, held an Aikido seminar lead by Bob Caron from Worcester, Mass. Bob was accompanied by his wife Jen who took most of the ukemi for him while he instructed.
While seminars go on almost every weekend of the year at some dojo or gym around the world, this was no ordinary seminar. This was the Sharin' with Caron, Mamma Slamma Aiki Jamboree! So, what made it different you ask? Thanks for asking...
The reason this seminar would be considered different is based on three things: Content, Delivery, Experience. The content consisted of a unique combination of Aikido, Zen and Bob's extensive knowledge of body mechanics. Bob is a doctoral student majoring in Movement Sciences and has sacrificed practically everything but his marriage and his dojo to become even more knowledgable about the body, mind and how to be a better teacher.
The weekend started off with a bang Friday evening at 6:00pm when Bob began to teach. His presence on the mat, his dynamic delivery and communication skills and, of course, his Aikido, made everyone in the dojo (about 50 people) perk up and listen. This level of energy never wavered, even for a moment, throughout the whole weekend. The seminar lasted from Friday evening through Sunday afternoon with a special session of Zen education and meditation training on Sunday morning.
In addition to the awesome training and fun we had on the mat, every evening was filled with partying, eating, drinking, and dancing as the "off mat" training continued until about 3 or 4 am every day.
The Toyoda Center has had many instructors come and teach their Aikido over the years and this seminar ranks right up there as one of the best. The most interesting aspect of the whole weekend is that Bob Caron is only a Nidan in Aikido and this was the first seminar that he has lead from beginning to end. Of course, Bob teaches almost daily in his own dojo for a large group of students but this was the first opportunity anyone has given him to lead a group of students that, in some cases, were higher rank than he. All I can say is that you would not have guessed his rank or that it was his first seminar since he lead it like a Shihan level professional instructor. Everybody left with so much more than just Aikido.... Great job Bob!
