makeshift mats
 

Has anyone made thier own mats for use in a garage type situation?. I was thinking maybe a few layers of thick carpet pad with a canvas tarp could work but I really dont have any space to mess with it. Anyone tried something similar for trainning at home?

I just use a carpeted surface, like the living room. (You can roll on concrete if you have to, after all.)

If you want to practice high breakfalls, I've heard a good reccomendation - drag your mattress out into the hallway/living room/etc., and use that. Very bouncy and forgiving!

Personally, though, I don't do that many rolls at home.

Out of curiousity, why are you trying to make a mat-like surface at home?

We had a dojo that was in rural Lousiana, and they swept pine needles under a canvas mat.

I know they are expensive, but I would recommend 4'x8' folding mats. They will run about $150 each.. You will probably need 3.

oh I am not making any.. I was just curious if there was an alternative to expensive mats ;)

I think one of the reasons they are so expensive is because they are meant to withstand a LOT of falls and still be there in one piece. You've got to keep this in mind when you are considering materials.

Why not inquire at local schools if anyone is getting rid of old practice mats at a school gym?

Seth - they are expensive, but I have had some for 11 years (with some patching). If you do put mats on concrete, put carpet down first, it will help soften the surface.

Used is a good idea if you can find them, try gymnastics schools. Sometimes the summers are slow and they need $.
