Kyu are the ranks below black belt. Dan are the ranks above. Some dojo use colored belts to designate kyu grades, others do not.

does this mean that coloured belts have kyu equivilants?

Generally, yes. I have seen both one-to-one and more-than-one-kyu to a color.

There is no universal standard. In my dojo it's rather simple. All kyu map to white, all dan to black.

Hi Daniel,

I noticed that in our dojo children wear coloured belts, for adults with a rand below black belt, kyu ranks are used. The colours of the belts for kyu ranks are white, blue, white/blue combinations (like white with blue stripe in the center or visa versa), brown, brown/black with combinations. For black belts dan is used.
Greg, if I'm correct your dojo is also associated with Tekamusu organization. Do you use the same system?

Regards,
Suren.

We're a member of the Takemusu Aikido Association. http://www.takemusu.org/ . Our dojo doesn't have children's classes, so no issue there. The TAA wouldn't dictate such, anyway.

So, we have 6 kyu grades that all map to a white belt.

Best regards,
