It seems to be down... maybe Mr. Seagal didn't share their sense of humor.

Well i don't seem to be able to see the link either...Anyway Steven Seagal sensei is a great aikido master, so he should be treated with the appropriate respect.I personally admire his technique, i wish some day to be able to have his skill, speed and effectiveness but most people are critical against him.Nevertheless, one should always be aware of this teacher's achievements in aikido and the level of his ability...

I certainly have no plans on attacking him to test his Aikido any time soon. :) But I do wonder about his demonstrations. It seems odd that he usually (From what I have seen) has an uke that is a lot smaller than he is. I'd really like to see him up against someone his own size or larger.

Good point Ashley, but Seagal Sensei is a seriously big guy. As I recall, he is 6-4, or 6-5 and he's got to top 300 pounds now. They're out there, but there aren't too many aikidoka of his size. Maybe some of the performers in the wrestling world could take the falls, but most professional football players couldn't.

An aikido demonstration is not a combat sport competition. The uke is taking the falls because the techniques would break his arm if he wouldn't.The size of Steven Seagal sensei is...huge,but that's not his fault. We can't assume that he uses his weight and height just because he was born big.Haruo Matsuoka sensei, the small Japanese uke Seagal sensei had in his earlier demonstrations is now a 5th dan aikido teacher who is throwing his bigger uke on the mat, using the same techniques and style that he learnt from his teacher Steven Seagal sensei. So "up against someone his own size" is a little out of place in a martial arts demonstration. It belongs to the world of fighting sports...

It's funny, I always thought his height would be an advantage, but when I had mentioned it, he instantly corrected me that it was something that he had worked to overcome.

Now watching him, it is clear how small he makes himself to overcome this 'advantage'. Watch him closely and you will see what I mean. I do remember seeing him work with a guy that was about 6' 4 and noticing that Seagal Sensei did not seem to 'sink' as much in technique.

Very interesting when changing points of view.

Oh baloney on that. You have to actually be thrown before you take any falls. Not so easy to do when you are not cooperating. You want to put him up against wrestlers...my money is on the wrestlers.
I remain distinctly unimpressed by him. There are any number of cross training aikido teachers who are good fighters who would hand him his hat.
I have to find the link to him getting tuned by old Judo Gene Labelle for talking smack about the stunt guys. Its on the net somewhere.

Mr. Harden, I didn't opine on his ability to throw, only his size. If he picked a person up and simply slammed him to the ground, he is big enough to really put the smack on someone and most people simply couldn't take it without injury. I would probably bet on the wrestlers as well, but I mentioned them only for their obvious ability to receive incredible falls and punishment. There may be better martial artists out there, but I still don't wanna grab ahold of him violently - that holds true for a couple of truck drivers I know, most NFL and NBA players, and a few members of the Hells Angels as well.

Now, would you furnish a link to your upcoming schedule of seminars since you are visiting here today anyway? I would really like to attend someday in the near future. Thanks in advance.
