Interesting -- I first heard it in the context of backcountry activities, and immediately knew what it meant. You can learn some things by reading about them, and you can learn other things by hearing horror stories about other people...but the lessons that really sink in are the ones where your own bad judgment leads to some painful experience. Preventing blisters, knowing how much water to carry, avoiding hypothermia, getting un-lost and staying found...those are skills that I have down at this point, but there was a price to pay for the education.

A failure really isn't a failure if it's treated as the birth of an opportunity to improve.

Aikido is a martial art, a failure to survive, negates the opportunity to improve or succeed.

If you quit, you resign to defeat, thus you do not learn anything, except oppression.

Deductive reasoning yields good judgment, trial and error fuels experiences that are retrospective.

Personally, I think many supplement their martial ineffectiveness, in relationship to Aikido, with philosophical prose and proliferate spirituality to bolster their ego.

I think maybe I read that in the Bible as well. well, proverbs. but yeah-learning from others. good stuff.
