I have not seen or hand any hands on with Tomiki.
personally I tend to prefer the aiki-urukai style of aikido.

Never heard of aiki-urukai but would be interested in learning more. Does the style/organization/dojo have a website? I tried a quick google but didn't turn up anything.

aiki urukai comme from the Uruk Hai in LOTR.
It denotes an aikido partictioner whose moto could be:
make it work before making it flow

That being said we have all have the withe hand of foster sensei on our forehead.

ok so is there also an Aiki-Sindar or Aiki-Quen? Because I'd far prefer the Elvish Styles myself. :D Uruk is just far to brutish for my sense of refinement I prefer something more subtle. ;)

All these style names confuse this poor beginner. I believe I am told my Dojo does the Yoshinkan. My friend, I think, does Yoseikan.... I could not begin to tell you the difference. But if there is a resource to give understanding on this that does not require joining yet another message board please point me at it.

So far I am given to understand that each one who practices the art brings his own flavor to it and thus style. So I would suspect that as suggested simply visiting another Dojo might offer up some new ideas for you.

Gimli, an experienced nidan in a chain-mail gi, uses his low center of gravity to unbalance opponents and throw them with shihonage...

And in the background, the always-inspiring presence of Gandalf Shihan, who defeats his enemies with no-contact kokyunage from a distance of 100 yards... :hypno:

I believe that would have been the little incident between Gandalf and Sauruman in their little tug o war with Theoden at Edoras... Gandalf delivered some fine Ukemi when he tossed Saurman out. OTOH Grima's Forward Ukemi on the steps outside...(See Extended version of Two Towers) left a bit to be desired.

You mean except Elrond's Aiki Expo they organized in the first book? Probably not often, but I hear members of the Imladris section traveled often to Lothlorien dojo to train under Galadriel, one of the few female shihans.

I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Wolf and taking his Bartitsu class at ISMAC in Detroit over Memorial Day weekend. He struck me as a very capable and insightful instructor. It is also interesting to learn of Barton-Wright and the foundation of Bartitsu, as it was one of the first attempts in the West to cross-train in Eastern and Western martial arts.
