Aikido
Doka of the Day - January 18, 2019
Pondering (the state of) this world
I fall into a lament,
Only to be reinvigorated again
When the light of the tumbling clouds
Builds the "vigorous force" inside me.

                              - Morihei Ueshiba

Article: "Perceptions of the Aikido Community" by Josephine Fan
Posted 1/17/2019 9:34pm [from Jun Akiyama]

Here’s an insightful article from Josephine Fan of Long Island Aikikai on "Perceptions of the Aikido Community."

From the article: “A particular question continued to pop up in my research: ‘Why do people have such a poor impression of Aikido?’ […] Taking in my experiences from understanding how social media worked, the simple answer was that the Aikido community itself gave a terrible perception and impression to the outside world. […] There's so much infighting ("My sensei is better than your sensei, my style is better than your style, the way I train is the best way to train") and lashing out against anyone that is different or new. It has very little to do with whether or not there is anything worth learning in it, since we know there are benefits to doing so. The perception of the Aikido community has amounted to a joke, and it's entirely deserved.”

Kupuna Aikido Hawaii: "Practicing a Fall to Prevent Injury"
Posted 11/24/2018 1:27pm [from Jun Akiyama]

Here is a news segment titled "Practicing a Fall to Prevent Injury" about Kupuna Aikido in Hawaii which offers classes to teach people how to fall safely. From the article: "Every year, millions of people 65 and older fall, according to the CDC, and three-million of them go to the emergency room. You probably wouldn't think that martial arts could be the answer, because while you can't plan for a fall, you can practice for it. Kupuna are falling left and right in this class by the non-profit Kupuna Aikido Hawai'i."
