Nikyo

From AikiWiki - AikiWeb Aikido Information

[edit] Nikyo

Nikyo is a technique which works through the wrist to lock the body. By turning uke's tegatana towards their center line, the two bones that make up the forearm skeletal structure are twisted around until they meet, which produces pain and immobilizes the arm.

There are several ways to apply nikyo:

  • From katatori, or simply by bringing uke's grabbed hand to nage's shoulder area, nage can "bow" forward and thus apply nikyo pressure.
  • Nage can also apply nikyo by grabbing the hand, using the other hand to secure the wrist (nage's hands should be close together), and cutting down while rolling uke's hand towards his or her head.
  • If nage's wrist is turned towards uke, as though nage were moving to draw a sword, and uke grabs cross-handed, nage can turn the wrist so that his or her tegatana cuts down into uke's wrist.
