Located about an hour northeast of Tokyo, Iwama was Morihei Ueshiba's country home where he retired to in 1942. There, he built the Aiki Shrine in 1943. Morihiro Saito sensei directed the dojo there until his death in May, 2002.
With the passing of Morihiro Saito sensei, the Aiki Shrine and the dojo there has been put under the direction of Aikikai Hombu dojo with Moriteru Ueshiba Doshu as the head of the dojo and Hiroshi Isoyama sensei as its dojocho. Hitohiro Saito sensei, 6th dan, has broken off from the Aikikai and has formed his own group, the Iwama Shin Shin Aiki Shurenkai.
