Irimi nage

From AikiWiki - AikiWeb Aikido Information

[edit] Iriminage

[edit] Shomenuchi Iriminage, 1

Initiation: Nage right hanmi with uke stepping forward for a shomenuchi strike.

Response: Nage slides right foot across the center line to the left slightly and forward bringing body and center slightly offline to allow movement to the outside of uke's attack. The shomen strike is blocked/deflected with the hand maintaining the kokyu ho hand position. Nage then steps up with the left foot and pivots tenkai to blend in the direction of uke's energy. Simultaneous with the turn a slight turn of the extended wrist/forearm counterclockwise will also help turn uke slightly off like and drop their shoulder. Once the nage and uke are facing the same direction the nage uses the left hand to control the uke's neck a pull it into the extended upper arm for control. Nage can then either step back while raising the right arm with the neck trapped or controlled pivoting and throwing off the right foot in a cutting down motion. The turning and lifting motion unweights uke. A shortened version can be performed without stepping back by using considerable hip motion. -- John Riggs
