[edit] Henka Waza: 変--技
Varied technique. Especially beginning one technique and changing to another in mid-execution. Ex. beginning ikkyo but changing to iriminage.
The literal translation of henka is "change". Henka techniques are characterized by a change from one technique to another. Such changes may be in response to an action by uke such as an attempted reversal.
For example, if nage is performing ikkyo but loses control of the elbow, then uke may try to rise back up. In henka waza, nage will lead uke's movement into another technique, like udegarame.
