My only disappointment is that I am the first to review this book. I do have a personal relationship to my teacher Tetsuro Nariyama and was heavily involved in the first round of translations. Feel free to delete this review because of it - but please wait till someone else has submitted one. I waited as long as I could.

Tetsuro Nariyama is Shihan of Shodokan Honbu, Board member and World Technical Director of the Japan Aikido Association. In addition to being a student of Kenji Tomiki he was deshi to Hirokazu Kobayashi (Aikikai Shihan) and holds advanced rank in that organization.

Fumiaiki Shishida Shihan is a professor of Budo history at Waseda University where Kenji Tomiki taught Judo and developed his Aikido theories.

The book outlines the history of Aikido, doing a very nice job of balancing out the roles of the various schools including Daito-ryu. The theories of Kenji Tomiki are covered including the influence of Judo's Kano. The technical decription of techniques range from basic to advanced and are suitable for all students of Aikido.

The original book was written as a text book and I know of at least one Aikikai Shihan that uses it as such. The historical sections alone make the book worthwhile. What impressed me most when I finally saw the finished product is how sensible the layout is. Almost immediately you come across the section - what is Aiki? For those members of the various electronic forums this question is a mainstay and here you have the meaning - both present and historical nicely described.

I was surprised at how well the book read. The initial translation directly from Japanese resulted in something that was decidedly more difficult - the editing did a reasonable job of smoothing out the rough edges. Both the Japanese and English versions used the same pictures and the quality of the latter is not as good as it could be,not sure why. Still the choice and quality of the initial pictures is very good for detailing the text. The original Japanese book was written in 1985 and occaisionally one can tell it is a bit dated. I would have prefered that it was up-dated a bit more than it was but that I can live with. I would also have prefered the inclusion of a bit more detail in certain parts of the history where there is a hint of divergent views still the book attemps to go beyond dogma.

Like I said - I am biased. However the book reflects the very professional attitude of both the Shihan that authored it and the very least provides a glimpse into a style of Aikido which offers a unique approach.

I suspect the lack of comments on this publication is because many of those who have bought the book feel like it would be commenting on their own teacher(s) - and who would want to do that!

Anyway, needless to say that it is an excellent book. It does not dabble in the "mysteries" or "secrets" of aikido; it simply describes the practice of a solid foundation and discrete techniques.

There is also good narrative as to the background of aikido; IIRC the author (Shishida Shihan) of this section has - and continues to - perform significant research into aikido history as well as other aspects of budo.

Apparently its Japanese publication was very well received by aikido people of all style backgrounds, indicating its worthwhile and broad applicability.
