Description: From the Publisher:

Aikido Shugyo, by Gozo Shioda, was originally released in Japanese in 1991. Throughout this important and insightful work, Shioda Sensei relates many stories about the time he spent training directly with the founder of Aikido, Morihei Ueshiba Sensei, about his war-time experiences and about his years as the Headmaster of the Yoshinkan. He also uses countless anecdotes to convey important insights into the functioning and application of Aikido techniques. Aikido Shugyo will inspire anyone interested in traditional martial arts with its lessons, its history, and its straight-forward approach to the application of Aikido techniques.

Aikido Shugyo is a rare insight from one of the leading and most well-known martial artists of his time. Already a “classic” in Japanese, it is a required text for every martial arts library. This first ever English publication is a faithful and complete presentation of the original Japanese text and includes a Forward by Kyoichi Inoue Sensei, 9th Dan, Dojo-cho of the Yoshinkan Headquarters in Tokyo, Japan.

One word ... EXCELLENT! The translation of this book into English is by far one of the best things to happen for all Aikido. If you are really interested in how atemi and practice was done in the old days, this is a must read. Shioda Sensei shares many things about being O'Sensei's uchi-deshi and how he and others on many occassions used Aikido in the real world. Not to mention other fascinating topics such as the "PRINCIPLES" of Aikido as taught to him. This is a must buy/read. Many thanks to Jacques Payet, Chris Johnston, Yoshinkan Honbu and all that made this book possible.

A fascinating book by one of the legends of Aikido. Shioda kancho speaks very frankly and directly - what aikido techniques work and what won't in a real fight. This book answers the question "What did O Sensei mean, 70% of aikido is atemi?" Not only for Yoshinkan folks, this book is for anyone with an interest in aikido.

This is a must-have book for any Aikido practitioner. If everyone on the Aikido forums would read (and comprehend) this book, the forums would cease to exist because there would be nothing left to talk about. The answers lie in this book.

All those stories you've heard about Gozo Shioda and his life and maybe took with a pinch of salt - they're all in here. Though I'd heard alot of this stuff before, it was only word of mouth; this puts some authority behind it and fills in the gaps.

This is not a technique book, nor is it really a method manual. Some of the stories may make you think of Gozo Shioda as a ruthless and violent man - no doubt he would have been without aikido. There is a non-violence message, but I'm not sure he really lived it himself. However this is a must have book if you are training in aikido as a self-defence. For me it illustrated why competition, and even practise in the dojo, can be unrealistic and underlined the importance of basics such as timing, distance and balance.

I would be wary of lending this book to a new student; not because it is difficult in any way, but because it provides an impression of aikido I'm not sure I agree with. However it is invaluable; especially for those who feel they need to reassess their approach to realistic aikido training.

Gozo Shioda was truly an aikido master. This book has historical importance (for the stories) and his insights will help to invigorate your own training.

An enlightening insight in to Shioda Sensei and his Aikido career and philosophy. Giving Shioda Sensei's view in to the psychology of the fighting arts and combat. A highly recommended book to Aikidoka of all schools. If you want a copy, then you can find it at: http://www.shindokanbooks.com/shugyo.shtml

Pros: Great insight into the mind of Gozo Shioda
Cons: None that I saw

For many aikidoka, there are questions that pop up from time to time on effectiveness of aikido, will it work in a real fight, etc. After reading Aikido Shugyo by Gozo Shioda, many of those questions are answered. This biography of Gozo Shioda's training days and analysis of aikido during confrontation is must read for aikido practioners (and other martial artists as well). It's very well written and you are immediately taken in by Shioda's analysis. I wish I would have bought this book years ago. The one thing in the book that sticks in my mind was Gozo Shioda's thoughts on competition and combat. From what I read, Gozo Shioda was very practical and saw competition in martial arts (especially judo) erode the very essense of self defense and combat. Very similar to some of the things we see today with the UFC and MMA. I highly recommend this book to anyone that would like to go back in time to understand the mind and training method designed by Gozo Shioda, founder of Yoshinkan Aikido.

P.S. This is not a technical manual
